IDEA, CONCEPT, DESIGN, AND EXECUTION

Saken Studio and Workshops

Saken is an Istanbul-based workshop that merges artisanal craftsmanship with an interdisciplinary approach to art and design. Founded in 2009 by industrial product designer Faik Kale and glass artisan Sakine Kale, the studio originated as an R&D workshop focused on glass, expanding through concept designs, prototypes, and experiments.

Today, Saken offers design and production services for luxury yachts, hotels, and residences, producing glass-based furniture, lighting, sculptures, and installations. Every detail is handmade, blending traditional workshop techniques with modern production logic.

Rooted in sustainability and craft, Saken embraces the human hand’s ability to bring soul to a work. Each piece—especially in glass art—explores the relationship between art, life, dreams, and reality, striking a balance between precision and the irregular beauty of the handmade.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR

FAIK KALE | Art Direction | CoFounder

In my work at Saken, I believe that design goes beyond mere functionality—it acts as a catalyst that stirs human emotions and thoughts. I think every design or artistic object should enrich daily life while awakening the desire to see, touch, and interact.

Each concept begins with an imagined “world” shaped by the dynamics of contemporary life, traditional craftsmanship, or the emotions and inspirations of the city. These designs merge functionality and aesthetics, offering the viewer a multi-layered experience.

Istanbul is a unique source of inspiration for the world of design. The city’s authentic and multicultural texture, combined with the translucent nature of glass, adds depth and character to our designs. At Saken, the relationship between ideas, materials, and craftsmanship reflects the essence of being human. Each object adapts to new spaces and lives while telling its own story.

WORKSHOP

SAKINE KALE | Glass Artist

Glass, with its rigid yet fluid nature, distinctive transparency, and luminous surface, brings a refined aesthetic and depth to every form it takes. The fusion of geometric and amorphous shapes with diverse materials and emotional elements transforms glass objects into hybrid entities that engage in a continuous dialogue with their surroundings.

Glass infuses its essence into the form, space, and its relationship with the objects around it, translating light and reflections into an aesthetic language. In this context, glass is the essence of my sculptures; what I shape is the grammar and language of this relationship.

At Saken, art and design intertwine. Artistic experiments draw inspiration from the functionality of design, while design transcends its boundaries through the freedom of art. This convergence gives rise to conceptual objects enriched both intellectually and aesthetically.
